Each author will read a selection from their work, followed by Q&A with the audience, moderated by author Terry Bisson. Booksigning and schmoozing follow in the Cafe. Borderlands will have a selection of books on sale next door at the Bookstore — but please feel free to bring books and magazines from home for signature as well. Come early and grab a bite to eat and a drink at the cafe first!

LAURA ANNE GILMAN – Laura Anne is the author of the popular Cosa Nostradamus novels and novellas, and the Nebula award-nominated The Vineheart War trilogy. Her newest is Silver on the Road, the first in the Devil’s West series from Saga / Simon & Schuster, beginning in October 2015. She has also dipped her pen into the mystery field as well, writing as L.A. Kornetsky (Collared, Fixed, Doghouse, and the forthcoming Clawed). A member of the writers’ digital co-op Book View Cafe, she continues to write and sell short fiction in a variety of genres, selling most recently to the anthologies Genius Loci and Temporally Out of Order (2015)

LOREN RHODES – For ten years, Morbid Curiosity magazine was devoted to the celebration of absurd, grotesque, and unusual true tales, submitted from contributors around the world. Loren Rhoads, creator and editor of the magazine, is a Bay Area novelist, with The Dangerous Type, book 1 of her space opera trilogy and book 2, Kill By Numbers out now, and book 3, No More Heroes is due in November, from Nightshade. She is also the editor of The Haunted Mansion Project: Year Two; 17 horror writers and artists spend a long weekend together in a haunted house in Northern California every year!

1997’s GATTACA is a sci-fi thriller that explores what happens when society can control that writing — when eugenics and genetic discrimination are the norm. Is this our future?

Expert commentary and audience Q&A will be provided by Prof. Hank Greely, Director of the Center for Law and the Biosciences at Stanford University. Dr. Greely is both Professor of Law and Professor of Genetics, and he directs Stanford’s Program in Neuroscience and Society.

It’s always a blast to be at this event — usually held at Wiscon, in Madison, WI, this year author Jo Walton was unable to attend, so this ceremony is THE presentation and party for the award!

The 2014 James Tiptree Jr. Memorial Award will be presented to Jo Walton for her novel My Real Children at Borderlands Books, 866 Valencia Street in San Francisco.

Author Ellen Klages, the Scott O’Dell Award winning author of The Green Glass Sea, will be present to interview Ms. Walton. Author Pat Murphy will talk about the founding of the Tiptree Award — and while there will not be a bake sale (one of the best ways the Tiptree Award organization raises money) the Borderlands Cafe will be open during the event as well.

As you may know (!) this is an award ceremony with lots of fun traditions 😉 The winner will be crowned with a tiara, serenaded with a song, and given chocolates and art — all specially created to honor her novel, My Real Children. In addition, this event will also include an interview with Jo Walton, a reading and a capella musical performance by Ada Palmer, and a CAKE! Other mischief may ensue. At a Tiptree event, it’s hard to say what might happen….but it’s always fun.

Special guests are expected — meet author Julie Phillips, who wrote the definitive biography, James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon! Books about and by Tiptree will also be for sale, courtesy of Borderlands Books — and play your cards right, and win a SPACE BABE temporary tattoo!

Summary of My Real Children

Jo Walton’s My Real Children is a richly textured examination of two lives lived by the same woman. This moving, thought-provoking novel deals with how differing global and personal circumstances change our view of sexuality and gender. The person herself changes, along with her society. Those changes influence and are influenced by her opportunities in life and how she is treated by intimate partners, family members, and society at large. The alternate universe trope allows Walton to demonstrate that changes in perceptions regarding gender and sexuality aren’t inevitable or determined by a gradual enlightenment of the species, but must be struggled for. My Real Children is important for the way it demonstrates how things could have been otherwise — and might still be.

Peter Straub is one of America’s foremost authors and a poet. His horror fiction has has received numerous literary honors such the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, The World Horror Convention Grand Master Award, the Bram Stoker Award, among others. He edited the Library of America volume, H. P. Lovecraft: Tales (2005), and is known for his books Ghost Story, Julia, Koko, In the Night Room, Floating Dragon, and A Dark Matter, among others. Michael Marshall Smith is a recent transplant to the United States, and the Bay Area. Originally from England, he is a novelist, screenwriter, and short story writer who also writes suspense as Michael Marshall. His first published story, “The Man Who Drew Cats”, won the British Fantasy Award in 1991 for Best Short Story. His first novel, Only Forward, won the August Derleth Award, and the Philip K. Dick Award. He runs Ememess Press, focusing on producing his ebooks, and was recently the Co-Chairperson for the World Fantasy Convention held in Brighton, 2013. Terry Bisson has been the moderator of SF in SF since it began in 2004. He founded the KGB Bar readings in NYC, and has a wide selection of writings in science fiction, among them the enormously popular “They’re Made of Meat”, and “Numbers Don’t Lie”.
