GRAPHIC DETAILS: CONFESSIONAL COMICS BY JEWISH WOMEN
While the history of women in comics is well-documented, and the Jewish contribution to the art form widely acknowledged, Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women will be the first museum exhibit to showcase the singular voices of female Jewish artists whose revealing diaristic and confessional work has influenced the world of comics over the last four decades.
On October 21, the Cartoon Art Museum will host a panel on autobiography in comics featuring several of the featured artists, experts, and the curators. Graphic Details is co-curated by Michael Kaminer, a New York journalist and collector whose December 2008 story on confessional comics in the Forward provided the impetus for the show. His co-curator, Sarah Lightman, is an award-winning fine artist, curator and arts journalist based in London who is researching a PhD at The University of Glasgow in Autobiography in Comics.

October 7th, 2010 · Comments Off on Karen Joy Fowler and Claude Lalumiere
Saturday October 16th
For our main October reading we welcome two very fine writers.
Karen Joy Fowler has her hotly-anticipated new short story collection out from Small Beer Press, What I Didn’t See and Other Stories. In her moving and elegant new collection, New York Times bestseller Karen Joy Fowler writes about John Wilkes Booth’s younger brother, a one-winged man, a California cult, and a pair of twins, and she digs into our past, present, and future in the quiet, witty, and incisive way only she can.
Claude Lalumiere, on a rare tour from Montreal, is the author of the collection Objects of Worship, “Twelve superb and sometimes quite disturbing stories … strange but powerful flavors of eroticism … Objects of Worship (A+) is a great collection and I strongly recommend it for every lover of literate speculative fiction.” Fantasy Book Critic. He is also the co-creator of Lost Myths, an online ‘zine that’s a “playful medley of cryptomythological fiction, pantheons, bestiaries, comics, art, games, readings, performance and more.” In his nonexistent spare time he’s also the Fantastic Fiction columnist for The Montreal Gazette.
As usual Terry Bisson will be on hand to introduce the readers and moderate a Q&A session. Borderlands Books will provide books for purchase.
Doors open at 7:00PM, Cash Bar – Proceeds to Variety, Readings begin at 8:00PM.

September 11th, 2010 · Comments Off on Amelia Beamer & Mark L. Van Name
Our September Reading features:
- Amelia Beamer
- Mark L. Van Name
Doors and cash bar open at 7:00PM
Event starts at 8:00PM
(Please note: due to an earlier event at the theatre, we are starting later than usual. There will be no admittance into the room before 7:00PM.)
Debut novelist, and Locus Magazine editor Amelia Beamer has struck gold her first time out, with The Loving Dead. According to io9: “This is the first zombie romance novel. No, it’s not a cheesy mashup of a Jane Austen joint. It’s just love and sex with zombies. Seriously, do we need to say more? Want. Now.” We agree, and think you will too. A funny, sexy, new take on an old trope that makes it live again!
It gives us great pleasure to continue our (new) tradition of serving a new “debut novel drink” and we’ll have our own take on “Zombies” at the bar!
Author Mark L. Van Name is doing a rather fine thing with his new Jon and Lobo novel, Children No More. From his website: “The program is simple: I’m donating every cent I receive (including the advance) from the sale of hardcover copies of Children No More to Falling Whistles to help rehabilitate and reintegrate child soldiers.” Children No More focuses on the complications that mount as Jon and Lobo rush straight into the darkness at the heart of humanity to save a group of child soldiers — and then face an even tougher challenge: When we’ve trained our children to kill, what do we do with them when the fighting is over?
Readings begin at 8:00PM, followed by Q & A moderated by author Terry Bisson. Book signing and schmoozing follow in the lounge. Books will be for sale courtesy of Borderlands Books.
Again, please note that author Mark Van Name donates 100% of all proceeds from his hardcover sales of Children No More — come on out and support this incredibly good cause, while helping Variety at the same time!

September 11th, 2010 · Comments Off on September Movies
In September we present an Anime Night, featuring:
Ponyo, the latest movie from the famous Studio Ghibli, is an unusually poetic, visually breathtaking work by the greatest of all animators, Hayao Miyazaki. (Miyazaki is the Japanese creator of My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and many other beloved films.) It’s wonderful and never even seems to try, simply unfolding fantastically. Sosuke, a 5-year-old who lives in a house on a seaside cliff, finds a goldfish trapped in a jar on the beach. This is Ponyo. Freeing her, he is rewarded by a lick on a finger that heals a cut. And by tasting human blood, we learn, Ponyo gains the ability to transform between fish and human…
The Wings of Honneamise is one of the most ambitious of all anime productions, directed by Hiroyuki Yamaga, only 24 at the time, whose drawing style is influenced both by comic books and by the graphic style of the great 19th century Japanese artist, Hiroshige. It’s a visually sensational extravaganza about an unkempt and disorganized young pilot named Shiro, a new member of the Royal Space Force, in a kingdom like Japan and like America. He seems on track to become the first man in space, little suspecting the sinister reasons why anyone would risk such an important flight on an officer as shabby as he is, and the old-time gung-ho pilots and misfit scientists who hang around inventing stuff are amazed when its first manned space shot is given priority.
All bar proceeds and tips benefit Variety Children’s Charity of Northern California.
