On the readings side that includes Roz Kaveney, all the way from London, our annual Litquake extravaganza, and Kim Stanley Robinson. The forthcoming readings schedule is here. And in the movies we have the fan favorite, Serenity, plus some Lovecraftian horror for Halloween. The advance movie schedule is here.

August Movie: John Carter (of Mars!)

July 31st, 2012 · Comments Off on August Movie: John Carter (of Mars!)

Saturday August 11thJohn Carter (PG-13, 132 mins)

Truly, we don’t feel this can POSSIBLY be as bad as Disney’s spin doctors claimed…it promptly disappeared from the theatres, but gee, we know a lot of people in the field of science fiction literature that really liked it! We’re going to let you make up your mind yourself – any fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs should find something enjoyable in there!

As a special bonus only for SF in SF attendees — we’re delighted to have a Burroughs scholar on hand to introduce the film! Author Richard A. Lupoff was the editor at Canaveral Press in the early 1960’s, when they issued many of Edgar Rice Burroughs‘ novels. This included first editions based on unpublished manuscripts and previously uncollected magazine stories. Lupoff also briefly served as a consultant to Pixar Studios on the John Carter motion picture. Ironically, he has never seen the finished film, so it will be as new to him as to anyone else in the audience! He is also the author of Master of Adventure: The Worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs.

5:30PM – doors and cash bar open
6:30PM – Event begins – free popcorn for the movie!
$5-$10 suggested donation at the door.

Not One, But Two June Readings

June 4th, 2012 · Comments Off on Not One, But Two June Readings

We are celebrating the summer with two great author events:

Saturday, June 16th: Lev Grossman & S.G. Browne

We are delighted to bring the authors of The Magicians, The Magician King, Fated, and Lucky Bastard together for one night of awesome authorial goodness! Lev Grossman is the NY Times-bestselling author of a duology touted as “the best urban fantasy in years, a sad dream of what it means to want something badly and never fully reach it.” He is a senior writer and book critic for Time Magazine.

S. G. Browne, with his new book Lucky Bastard, is an up-and-coming San Francisco author, whose debut novel, Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament, helped coin the phrase “rom-zom-com” (romantic-zombie-comedy). Lucky Bastards, is about Nick Monday, a private detective with the unique ability to steal other people’s luck. Find out who the highest bidder is for this saleable commodity!

Thursday, June 21st: Robert J. Sawyer & Rachel Swirsky

He is one of only eight writers in history — and the only Canadian — to win all three of the world’s top Science Fiction awards for best novel of the year: the Hugo, the Nebula, and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award.

Rachel Swirsky is, quite simply, one of the best short fiction authors writing today, with a 2010 Nebula Award for her novella, “The Lady Who Plucked Red Flowers Beneath the Queen’s Window.” She was the founding editor of the PodCastle podcast and served as editor from 2008 to 2010.
