DARYL GREGORY is a science fiction, fantasy and comic book author. A Clarion Writing Workshop alum, he was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, graduating in 1987 from Illinois State University with majors in English and theater. After graduation, he taught high school in Michigan for three years, lived in Salt Lake City for several years, then moved with his family to State College, Pennsylvania, where Gregory was employed by Minitab. Gregory moved in 2016 to Oakland, California, where he lives with his partner Liza Groen Trombi, who is the Locus Magazine Publisher and Editor in Chief.

Gregory’s first sale was “In the Wheels” to the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in 1990. His first novel, Pandemonium (Del Rey Books, 2008) won the 2009 Crawford Award for best first fantasy book, and was nominated for the World Fantasy Award, the Mythopoeic Awards and the Shirley Jackson Award. His second novel, The Devil’s Alphabet (Del Rey Books, 2009) was named one of 2009’s best books by Publishers Weekly, and was also nominated for the 2010 Philip K. Dick Award. His third novel, Raising Stony Mayhall (Del Rey, 2011), was named one of the best science fiction books of the year by Library Journal, and his story collection Unpossible and Other Stories (Fairwood Press, 2011), was also named one of 2011’s best SF books by Publishers Weekly. Afterparty (Tor, Titan, 2014) followed, along with the novella “We Are All Completely Fine”, published by Tachyon Publications in 2014; this was a Nebula Award finalist, and won the 2015 World Fantasy Award for Best Novella, as well as the Shirley Jackson Award.

Gregory’s new book, the literary speculative novel Spoonbenders was published by Knopf in June, and is being developed for television by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content.

REBECCA GOMEZ FARRELL writes all the speculative fiction genres she can conjure up. An associate member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Becca’s shorter works have been published by Future Fire, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Typehouse Literary Magazine, and Pulp Literature among other outlets. She is thrilled to have had Meerkat Press publish her debut fantasy novel, Wings Unseen, in August 2017.

Her food and drink blog, theGourmez.com, has garnered multiple accolades and influences every tasty bite of her fictional worldbuilding. In the past, she has also contributed her photography skills and commentary to her love of General Hospital, which has been in her blood since the womb. She credits soap operas for heightening her fiction’s romantic elements and appreciating the layers generational history can add to her work. Curtis Chen was once a Silicon Valley software engineer, but now writes fiction and runs puzzle games near Portland, Oregon. His debut novel, Waypoint Kangaroo, (Thomas Dunne Books) is a science fiction thriller about a super-powered spy facing his toughest mission yet: vacation. MEGAN O’KEEFE was raised among journalists, and as soon as she was able to, she joined them by crafting a newsletter which chronicled the daily adventures of the local cat population. She has worked in both arts management and graphic design, and spends her free time tinkering with anything she can get her hands on. Megan lives in the Bay Area and makes soap for a living. It’s only a little like Fight Club. She is a first place winner in the Writers of the Future competition.

O’Keefe’s trilogy — The Scorched Continent — began with her debut novel, Steal the Sky, in early 2016. The second book, Break the Chains, and the third book (which we celebrate at this event!) is Inherit the Flame (all from Angry Robot Books). In the first book, Detan Honding is a wanted conman of noble birth and ignoble tongue; with his friend Tibs, he may have pulled off one too many cons against the city’s elite. To make a quick escape, they set their sights on the airship of the exiled commodore Thratia. But plans go awry…did Detan accidentally walk into a revolution and a crusade? He has to be careful — there’s a reason most people think he’s dead.

Book two sees Detan undertake a more dangerous task…rescuing Nouli, the infamous engineer who built the century gates that protect the imperial capital of Valathea. But Nouli is imprisoned on the Remnant Isles, an impervious island prison run by the empire, and it’s Detan’s fault. Detan doesn’t dare approach Nouli himself, so his companions volunteer to get themselves locked up to make contact with Nouli and convince him to help. Now Detan has to break them all out of prison, and he’s going to need the help of a half-mad doppel to do it.

Steven R. Boyett‘s novels include the fantasy classic Ariel, The Architect of Sleep, Elegy Beach, and Mortality Bridge. He has been a professional martial arts instructor, paper marbler, advertising copywriter, proofreader, writing teacher, website designer & editor, chapbook publisher, and DJ who has played in major cities and Burning Man. He lives in the San Francisco Bay area. His latest book, Fata Morgana, was written with Ken Mitchroney.

Ken Mitchroney’s film and television credits include director, head of story, director of photography, and storyboard artist on Storks, The Lego Movie, The Ant Bully, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., The Annoying Orange Show, Mighty Magiswords, and more. His comic illustration includes Ren & Stimpy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Myth Conceptions, and creating the influential Space Ark. He is an official artist for the Ed “Big Daddy” Roth estate, and official illustrator for the Oakland Athletics and at one time the Baltimore Orioles. Mitchroney has been a professional race-car driver and pinstriper, and restores and runs vintage locomotives. He is currently involved with the restoration of the Ward Kimball collection at the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris, California. He lives and works in the San Francisco Bay area and Los Angeles.

Ellen Klages is the author of two acclaimed historical novels: The Green Glass Sea, which won the Scott O’Dell Award, and the New Mexico Book Award; and White Sands, Red Menace, which won the California and New Mexico Book awards. Her story, “Basement Magic,” won a Nebula Award and “Wakulla Springs,” co-authored with Andy Duncan, was nominated for the Nebula, Hugo, and Locus awards, and won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novella. She is a graduate of Second City’s Improv program, and has a degree in Philosophy from the University of Michigan, leading to many odd jobs that began with the letter P (proofreader, photographer, painter, pinball arcade manager). Her novella, “Passing Strange” came out in January, 2017 from tor.com and a new collection of short fiction, Wicked Wonders, has just been published by Tachyon. Ellen lives in San Francisco, in a small house full of strange and wondrous things.

Her brand-new new collection, Wicked Wonders, also from Tachyon, will be available for sale at this event.

In addition to her writing, she serves on the Motherboard of the James Tiptree, Jr. Award, and was somewhat notorious as the past auctioneer/entertainment for the Tiptree auctions at Wiscon. When she’s not writing fiction, she sells old toys and magazines on eBay, and collects lead civilians.

David D. Levine: Levine’s debut novel, a Regency interplanetary airship adventure novel titled Arabella of Mars, will be available at this event. His “Tk’Tk’Tk” won the 2006 Hugo Award for Best Short Story, his story “Nucleon” won the James White Award, and he has been shortlisted for awards including the Hugo, Nebula, Campbell, Sturgeon, and Locus. His stories have appeared in Asimov’s, Analog, F&SF, Realms of Fantasy, Tor.com, numerous anthologies and websites, and multiple Year’s Best anthologies, as well as his collection Space Magic from Wheatland Press, which won the Endeavour Award for the best SF or Fantasy book by a Pacific Northwest writer. A contributor to George R. R. Martin’s bestselling shared-world series Wild Cards, Levine is also a member of Book View Cafe, a writer-owned publishing cooperative, and Oregon Science Fiction Conventions Inc., a nonprofit organization which produces OryCon. He has narrated podcasts for Escape Pod, PodCastle, and StarShipSofa and the audiobook of Space Magic, and his video production “Dr. Talon’s Letter to the Editor” was a finalist for the Parsec Award. In 2010 he spent two weeks at the Mars Desert Research Station, a simulated Mars base in the Utah desert.

Robyn Bennis: Bennis is a scientist living in Mountain View, California, where she works in biotech but dreams of airships. She has done research and development involving human gene expression, neural connectomics, cancer diagnostics, rapid flu testing, gene synthesis, genome sequencing, being so preoccupied with whether she could that she never stopped to think if she should, and systems integration. Her apartment is within sight of Hangar One at Moffett Airfield, which was once the West Coast home to one of America’s largest airships, the USS Macon. Her debut novel, The Guns Above, will be available at this event.
